Provo City has approved our neighborhood matching grant!!!!
This means we have a couple opportunities to clean up Slate Canyon for development of the bike skills course that will be located on top of water tanks.
Our first tasks to complete are removal of invasive plants such as Siberian Elms, sunflowers, and thistles, as well as picking up debris, sticks, and yard waste from the surrounding area. (If you are guilty of dumping grass clippings or other yard waste, please refrain from doing so in the future.) We also need to trim as much grass as possible because it is a fire hazard and the weather is hot.
Our first clean-up days will be next Monday, July 27th and Saturday, August 1st. On Monday we will be starting at 6:30 and working as long as we have daylight. Monday is a great activities for families to get involved with. Removal of the sunflowers, garbage, sticks and debris is a great pastime for little hands. You are welcome to bring a treat to share and refresh yourselves while working.
Saturday we want to beat the heat and will start at 7:00 a.m. and work until noon. The parks department will have some of their tree removal workers on site to facilitate the removal of the Siberian Elms. Provo City has a trailer full of equipment that we are able to use. If you would like to bring your own, just make sure you are responsible for it. I believe there are plenty of shovels and gloves, but Provo has less equipment that would be helpful with the trees. If you have a weed-wacker, that is a great tool to help cut down the tall grasses.
Come for one day, both, an hour, or several! We need to keep track of volunteer hours fulfilled so please access the following google docs form and write your name as well as the dates and times you will be attending so that we can check you off when we see you. If you did not sign up initially to pledge hours, there is plenty to do and it is never to late. Spread the word to neighbors. Let's make this park happen.
